Fern & Fauna is a landscape design and stewardship studio based in Boulder County, Colorado. A landscape should earn its keep: for pollinators, for soil, for the people who move through it every day.
Why we began
Why We Started Fern & Fauna
Fern & Fauna started from a simple wish, to give something back to what supports us. The earth, the plants and trees, the soil, the waters, the atmosphere, the living systems both micro and macro that hold everything else up. It felt important not to move through this life only as a consumer, only as a taker, but to build a practice rooted in giving and in reciprocity with all of it.
That intention asks a lot. It means learning the languages and the needs of many beings, most of them not human, and staying willing to keep learning. But it’s the work we wanted to do.
Our approach
Design & Planning
Good design here means choosing plants that belong, water use that holds up in a dry year, and materials that age gracefully against the Front Range sky. Those aren't aesthetic preferences. They're what makes a landscape able to keep giving back.
Installation & Stewardship
We install with care and return through the seasons, tending the landscape as it takes root and grows.
Why native & low-water
Native Habitat
The right plants support more life. We choose ones that bloom in succession and build habitat that holds from spring through frost.
Water Resilience
Once established, our plantings run mostly on local rainfall, needing less intervention and improving with time.

Owner & Principal Designer
Kelcie founded Fern & Fauna to build landscapes that give back more than they take. She leads design and long-term stewardship, with a focus on native ecology and a habit of planning for a landscape’s fifth season rather than its first.
